Present perfect
Uses:
To talk about a past situation that relates to the present.
They have seen that film before.
To talk about life experiences
He hasn't visited Italy yet.
I have tried water-skiing.
To talk about a recent action (we specify the time)
I haven't talked to him today.
We used it with for and since for an action that started in the pass and is still in progress now.
They lived in Japan since 2018. They love it!
She has lived there for three years.
Has she studied for the exam?
Structure
Subject + have / hasn't past participle
Have / Has + subject + past participle?
Subject + have / has + past participle
Ever / Never
To talk about life experiences.
Ever
Means: at any time of the past. We used it in questions.
Have you ever watched a horror film?
Never
Means: at no time in the past. We used with a positive verb.
I've never seen this film before.
Past simple
Uses:
To talk about a situation that is now finished.
Did you have a bicycle when you were young?
I went to the grocery store yesterday.
To talk about an action in a specific time in the past
I woke up at midday.
For an achievement or an experience when a person is no longer alive.
Chopin wrote many melodies.
For an action or event that lasted for a specific period of time in the past.
When she was a child, she cried a lot.
We didn't have any money.
