Debora, Can create others to assume our patient is or "should"…
Debora
SO WHAT
-
2) Racial Bias
-
Debora needs education on how to improve her diet based on what she typically eats and not what is stereotypical of her race
-
4) Overweight bias
Being told to avoid pop, chips, and fried food could be intrusively blaming her new diagnoses of gestational diabetes due to more diet choices coupling with her increased weight gain
-
-
WHAT
-
2) Racial bias
“A system of structuring opportunity and assigning value based on phenotypic properties (e.g. skin color and hair texture associated with “race” in the United States), which ranges from daily interpersonal interactions shaped by race to racialized opportunities for good education, housing, employment, and other resources, and unfairly disadvantages people belonging to marginalized racial groups”
4) Weight bias
"Weight bias refers to the negative ideologies associated with obesity. These can include laziness, lack of willpower, a lack of moral character, bad hygiene, low level of intelligence and unattractiveness. Stigmatizing beliefs and ideologies can lead to stigmatizing acts"

NOW WHAT
Incorporating a Social Worker as a patient advocate is vital in this case to provide Debora a rapport that she can feel more heard in her wishes.
-
Utilizing effective communication within the interdisciplinary team to acknowledge, address, and remove bias
Identifying and addressing potential areas where implicit bias might be influencing Debora’s care early in team interactions
-
Provide resources and support groups to include pregnant & new moms over 35 yrs old and gestational diabetes
-
When speaking with a patient, make sure to ask questions to the patient to understand their desires, cultural norms, and knowledge before making assumptions
Dietitian consultation to first assess Debora's current meal plan and then incorporate a healthier alternative that follows similar interests. A collaborative and affordable plan she can continue to follow throughout the entire pregnancy.
-
Can create others to assume our patient is or "should" be done having children, this is unfair as this is not what Debora expressed.
-
-
Debora had 2 successful vaginal deliveries. With these issues arising during her care, Debora will form a poor rapport and a more stressful experience.
