Unit 5 - Gene Expression

Protein Synthesis
Transcription, The process by which mRNA is formed, This happens by RNA polymerase “unziping DNA” and allowing mRNA to base pair with the DNA portion. The “A” “T” pair becomes a “A” “U” pair. This happens in the cytoplasm in Prokaryotes and in the nucleus with Prokaryotes.
Translation is where the mRNA is read one "codon" or 3 base pairs at a time to match with a opposite tRNA to form a amino acid.

DNA structure
DNA has 4 bases which can be A, T, G or C, A pairs and is equal to T, and G pairs and is equal to C, A and G are purines as they are bigger; C and T are pyrimidines as they are smaller
-
DNA is a dual stranded molecule with individual nucleic acids made of deoxyribose sugar the sugar end is called 3' and the other phosphate end is 5'
