This book displays many different characters from both sexes, and gender norms and roles are of big importance in this book. Besides from love and how women and men perceive it, the two different sexes are put in comparison in relation to magic, to ideals, and even to political standings and activities. In particular, it's notable how the author portrays the two genders compared to the fight between the different parties. While men are ready to fight for their parties, women appear indifferent to the fight, focusing on giving actual humanitarian aid. The only woman who engages in political activity is Alba, who takes part to a protest against the conservative party. While occupying the school, she starts menstruating and has to leave the building escorted by the police. She comes to think women are not suitable for politics.
