Characteristics of informal housing
What is the housing like?
They build their homes out of anything they can find such as scrap metal, rubbish.
They are very closely packed together and unstable meaning they are dangerous to live in.
What are the issues with it / What problems are linked to these kind of houses?
Infrastructure is poor.
There are problems with reliability of electricity supplied and other utilities.
They are unstable and dangerous to live in.
There is often fires and when there is they spread quickly as the houses are so packed together.
There is poor air quality.
Creates a huge amount of human waste and rubbish.
There big piles of waste attract rats which can cause disease.
Where is it usually located?
Land often may not be suitable for the purpose: river beds which may fill with water after rains, land close to industrial activity which may be bed for people's health, or land on steep and unstable slopes. These properties are sometimes affected by landslides and flooding.
It is often built on land which does nor belong to those who are building it.
What is life like for people who live in these kind of settlements?
No electricity or running water. Sometimes they try and connect to an existing electricity line, but this can result in fires
Infant mortality rates are high
Disease rate is high and the rats spread the diseases.
Unventilated rooms. This means the smoke from fires inside houses has nowhere to go.
Children may have to leave education to go and work to support their families
Crime rate in young people is high due to the lack of things for them to do
