Informal growth
What is the housing like?
It is very rampant and they are clung together. This means that there is very high density of people in these areas, which also means that due to the amount of people they are made hastily to house the population, causing them to be very poor quality.
What problems are linked to
these types of housing?
They are poorly funded, so the houses themselves are not safe and very susceptible to natural disasters. This also means that collateral damage is rampant when these disasters strike due to their close proximity. And sanitation is lacking.
What are the issues with this
It takes up areas which may destroy prior animal habitats, this can be seen in places like the amazon in Brazil or Africa. This also means that the development is very makeshift and poverty will be rampant along with crime.
What is life like for people living in these settlements
There are bad living conditions as there is a lack of sanitation and hygiene. This combines for how dangerous it is in the area due to lack of services and therefore crime is found throughout these slums.
Where is it normally located?
It can be located in a range of places as when urbanising any available land is usually used for development of houses, even in places where it is unstainable.

Made up using scrap metal or other rubbish, with little electricity and running water.
What problems are linked
to this type of housing
This means that houses are very unstable, meaning they could collapse, injuring inhabitants. It could also lead to the spread of disease, as there is little sanitation. People may try to hook up to electricity outlets, but this may cause fires, which could spread rapidly in the crowded area.
What are the issues with this
The land can be swampy, contaminated, easily flooded, or built on steep, unstable slopes, meaning that properties can be affected by landslides, flooding, and diseases.
Where is it normally located
It is often built on land which doesn't belong to those building, and often land that is not suitable for the purpose
