Grant Proposal
The proposal should answer these questions
o Why this project?
o Why you?
o Why at your institution?
o Why this sponsor?
o Why now?
These sections should be included in every proposal (and some may call for addition sections)
Background, including statement of need
Includes preliminary results from what is presently known of the topic
Generally structured as: Background/known followed by unknown/problem/need. You could also include hypothesis and summary
Research design
Serves to propose what approach you will take to address the problem/need
Should be structured as: hypothesis(if applicable), experimental design, analysis, expected results, alternatives (if applicable)
You should cover: how you’ve discovered your findings, what you want to add to the topic, the experimental approaches, expected outcomes, potential alternative approaches, and the implications
Specific Aims
Provides detailed approach to the goal listed in 2-5 steps
Each aim is listed in bold or highlighted, followed by a brief description
Could be combined with abstract
Abstract
Should be a summary of the proposal, mentioning the highlights from each section
Ensure you include the objective, even italicizing or boldfacing it
Pay special attention to the first and last sentence
Significance/Impact
Last paragraph of proposal, should state the impact and significance of the project
Focus on how this benefits people not your goals
Can include evaluation plans
Pay close attention to instructions and follow them EXACTLY
Funders may like their proposals structured in a specific way
You may be asked for additional content such as reference letter, certifications, permissions, etc
You also need to include the budget you are requesting, there will typically be assistance if putting this together
