Married one of students, Alice Chipman. Chipman was interested in social problems and how they impacted education. Which led to them both working together.
In 1894 they moved to University of Chicago , where he took a position teaching philosophy.
His Dewey's Laboratory School established the University of Chicago as the center of thought on progressive education.
