Terms for phase changes
Melting
Melting, or fusion, is a physical process that results in the phase transition of a substance from a solid to a liquid.
-
Freezing
Freezing is a phase transition where a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing point.
-
Sublimation
Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from a solid state to a gas state. It does not pass through the usual liquid state, and only occurs at specific temperatures and pressures.
-
Solid
Definite shape
Definite volume
Tightly packed particles
When heated expands slightly
Does not conform to the shape of the container
Incompressible
-
Liquid
Flows
Constant volume
Takes shape of container
Particles are less closely packed and can move past each other
Incompressible
