Is it possible to create a theoretical self sustaining city?
What is meant by this is that is it possible for a theoretical city to sustain itself without any unrequired exports (essentials like food and water are exceptions to this rule due to being considered vital to life)
My first order of business is to create a currency to ease any financial calculations that may occur during this study since finance is the backbone of the study since it determines what we can and can't do, introducing the currency $CELL
One unit of CELL (which is measured using a lowercase c) is equivalent to the fixed real world value of $1000, which means linking this to the GBP, we can simulate steady inflation based on real world metrics and predictions, for example, right now as of the 6th of February 2024, 1c is worth about £797.01.
The reason why that CELL is not linked to the static value in pounds is to be able to create a rising and falling economy so theres also the additional challenge of managing real world inflation rates
These analytics will be taken through not only real world metrics and averages in research via the medium of data and graphs, but also my own metrics and averages from the theoretical city which will be primarily based on the value of $CELL
They won't only be data and numbers however, i will conduct surveys online of people in varying successful and failing cities to operationalize and quantify emotion and morale towards specific events in the cities
Planning and architecture will be created pre theory construction in order to actively plan out the different areas, zones and where certain key facilities will be
I am using the base map of american city san francisco california, only without any builidings, construction or government, to clarify, this is not a recreation of san francisco, i am simply using the map of the city as a base design for the landscape of the city
Policies and the Government will be handled by me exclusively, i may take inspiration from real life government policies, however, i will not be fully basing my policies off of one specific government, these are also subjective policies meaning they can change over time
The End goal is for the city to sustain itself over a simulation of 10 years, it will be measured month through month with inflation rates to follow, the study will end after the 120th month passes or if we reach 0 or below in money. In order for the study to be successful, the city must not only reach the 120 month mark, but it needs to be in profit as it does so, or else it will eventually fail if it is losing money. The study will also end as a failure as soon as the money hits 0 or below.
I will start with a value of grant value of about 70000c (equivalent to about 70 million dollars and is about 55 million pounds as of 23/02/24) which will allow for me to start developing the city from the ground up.
Research is vital to the project as it allows for me to see what cities do to make them succeed and combine those ideologies into my own project which will allow for it too succeed
However i wont just be researching positive connections, i will also be researching negative connections in order to se the real world consequences of bad choices made by the city itself
This research allows for me to not only simulate bad city choices when i have to make them in order to save an industry or the economy, this creates a domino effect in which the city and the project will fail
Analyzing different scenarios and the publics reaction to them is the crux of the project
In order to properly achieve this i will also need to conduct a proper risk assessments on any ventures which might be potentially damaging or harmful to not only the city but also the surrounding environment
These consequences could pile up quickly due to the long lasting effects of things like fossil fuels and may result in an overall net negative for the city
The City Simulation will produce a number of internal data and through quick simulation, measurable graphs which will provide excellent data to not only the research but also on hand as I look to see what I can immediately or gradually improve upon in the city.
For Example, it will produce a financial report based on where the money comes in from and where it loses money from which will allow for me to adjust accordingly based on the results
