- - - - Fyodor Dostoevsky went to prison for being apart of an intelectual group, where he had witnessed many of what became his inspirations. After returning to Russia, Fyodor noticed that several highly intellegent people were abandoning education and the idea of morality in general. They then go on to believe in more utilitarianism ideas and were very egotistical. Crime and Punishment was Dostoevsky's response to what he had witnessed
        
        The author originally began brainstorming for crime and punishment in a Siberian prison and worked to incorporate crime and psychological theories
    - - The bible is referenced often in Crime and Punishment, as such on page 326. This is for representation of redemption that foreshadows the end of the book
        
        Raskolnikov mentions Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and drinking from the cup. This alludes to Raskolnikov accepting his fate
        
        Marmeladov mentions work from the Book of Revelations and the model of satan by stating "And He will say unto us, 'Ye are swine, made in the image of the Beast and with his mark; but come ye also!'"

        Lazarus, similar to Raskolnikov, committed murder, then is resurrected by Jesus. The resurrection symbolizes Raskolnikov confessing to his crimes and realizing he is not extraordinary as he had believed

        The dream Raskolnikov has about the horse symbolizes the murder he commits and is foreshadowing that it is about to occur. The horse is Alonya
        
        Marmeladov says "Do you understand, sir, do you understand what it means when you have absolutely nowhere to turn?" (59) In the end of the book. Raskolnikov cuts ties with everyone then realizes that he must confess his murders

        Believes it is better to live: "Where is it I've read that someone condemned to death says or thinks, an hour before his death, that if he had to live on some high rock, on such a narrow ledge that he'd only room to stand, and the ocean, everlasting darkness, everlasting solitude, everlasting tempest around him, if he had ro remain standing on a swuare yard of space all his life, a thoussand years, eternity, it were better to live so than to die at once! Only to live, to live and live! Life, whatever it may be!...How true it is! Good God, how true! Man is a vile creature..." (160)
