Electoral systems
FPTP
ADVANTAGES- it is simple to understand as you can just look at who has the most votes and see who has won locally
you cn the person to account as you can get rid of them at the next election
Keeps extremists out of government- as these extremist supporters are normally spread so they do not gain any seats
Strong and stable government- leads to a larger mandate to pursue policies
DISADVANTAGES- In safe seats like Christs church there may be wasted votes for example voting for the greens
Bigger parties do well under FPTP as you may get less percentage of votes but a larger percentage of seats for example in the 2019 general election the Tories got 44% of the vote however gained 56% of the seats
Can do well by being a concentrated party for exmaple the SNP
AMS
Used in Scottish parliament, london assembly, welsh senedd
There are constituency seats and top up seats. You get two votes one for consitutioency one for a regional top up MP
ADVANTAGES-
electoral reform in the UK
P- strong stable government- single party, these have a strong mandade and accountabiity
H- doesnt always make a strong and stable government- coalition
P- Stops extremists parties
H- no small parties- bigger parties get more seats- overrepresentation- labour, conservative, SNP. UKIP in 2015- 13% of vote, one seat
P- consituency link- everyone has own MP, hold to account
H- scarificying proportionality
impacts of refurendums
devolution referendums- devolution occurred Scottish- increase demand for independence, differences in legislation. Rise of the SNP, wales- more powers to wales, similar powers to Scotland. Northern Ireland- peace in northern Ireland, specifically designed for power share . Rise of SNP lead to conflict from Westminster- gender bill, labour has suffered with the rise of the SNP. West loathian question
AV refurendum- people dont want electoral reform. Stuck with FPTP- this has been cemented
EU- impact EU refuredum is significant- no longer subject to EU law- brought back sovereignty- single market and immigration. Factoertame. 2 primeministers reigned and divisions of brexit
Should we use refurendums
Positive- direct democracy- increased participation, legitamcy
large group of people- were not represented
