The king was at the top
The King's power depended on the powerful privileged states (nobles and clergy)
NOBLES
They didn't work
Most important members were the lords of feudal manors
They collected taxes from the inhabitants and administered justice.
CLERGY
They looked after the souls of people
As nobles, they didn't pay taxes
High born members of the clergy (bishops) could be feudal lords and have feudal manors like nobles
COMMON PEOPLE (Ex: Peasants, doctors, tarders, craftsmen...)
They were judged by their lords
They paid taxes to support the privileges states and the monarchy
3 BASIC TRAITS OF A NEW ERA
Economic changes:
Craft, trade and financial activities experienced a huge boom
Geographical exploration and discovery increased and intensified trade and the use of money
Cultural changes:
New artistic styles appeared
New cultural movements
Culture reached more people than ever thanks to the revolutionary ivention of the printing press.
Religious changes:
It was a time of intolerance with great persecution of Jews and Muslims
Wars between Christians due to the emergence of denominations which separated from the papal authority of Rome.
Social changes:
The burgeoise acquired influence and wealth
A demographic recovery after the drop in population in the 14th century.
Political changes:
Monarchies gained power
