Redox 1.7
Assigning oxidation states
Rule 1: Un-combined element have an oxidation state of 0
Rule 2: Some elements have the same oxidation state in all their compounds
Rule 3: For a compound, oxidation state must sum to 0
Rule 4: For an element existing as ion - the oxidation state is charge on ion
Rule 5: For compound ions the sum of oxidation states = charge on ion
More Complex half - equations
1.Write down the formula of reactants and products
Balance Oxygens using water
Balance hydrogen atoms by adding H+ ions
Balance the charge using electrons
Scale up Half equations in order to join into ionic equation
Linking oxidation states to Redox
An increase in oxidation Shows an element being oxidised
If a decrease in oxidation state is reduction
Oxidising agent - Something that accepts electrons (Being Reduced)
Reducing agent - Something that donates electrons (being oxidised)
Redox
Oxidation and Reduction - Can be expressed in terms of electron transfer
Oxidation is the loss of electrons, Reduction is the gain of electrons
must be aqueous to be broken in ionic equation
