Teaching Games for Understanding
Target games
Big idea:
Participant propels an object, preferably with a high degree of accuracy, at a target.
Examples: bowling, golf, disc golf, curling, horseshoes/ring toss, shuffleboard, Snow Snake, beanbag toss/corn hole, and bocce.
Striking/fielding games
Big idea:
Participant strikes an object, so it is placed away from defenders in the field in order to score runs and to stop an opposing group from scoring runs.
Examples: kickball, bellyball, baseball, cricket, rounders, and softball.
Net/wall games
Big idea:
Participant propels an object into space, trying to make it difficult for an opponent to return it.
Examples: badminton, squash, pickleball, table tennis, sitting volleyball, blind volleyball, fukuhara, and Sepak Takraw.
Zone games
Big idea:
Participants work to control the various zones within the playing area and maintain possession of an object to score points.
Examples: capture the flag, basketball, football, rugby, sledge hockey, handball, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, 4 or 9 square, and speedball.
