Physical Development in Birth to 5 Matters
Moving and Handling
Range 1: Holds up own head, tracks objects, reaches out, grasps, rolls over, belly crawls.
Adult can support by: Opportunities to move and be active in the day. Time outdoors. Play simple back and forth games.
Environment can support by: Having interesting items within reach, providing a safe, smooth, warm surface to move around on.
Range 2: Crawls, can sit unsupported, palmar grip, can pull to standing. Points, starts walking. Throws objects, carries, squeezes and mark makes.
Adult can support by: At least 3 hours a day moving and being active. Active physical experiences, such as bouncing. Lots of time in bare feet.
Environment can support by: Cushions, tunnels, slopes and low steps. Push along chairs, music for dancing and gloop.
Range 3: Walks more securely, up stairs with support, can stand, squat and sit. imitates movement, uses both hands independently, mark makes with crayons and chalk etc.
Adult can support by: Encourage exploration of schemas. Feeding independence, water play.
Environment can support by: swing, spin, bounce, time outdoors, daily walk.
Range 4: Can rise to feet without using hands. Runs safely, can jump forward, kicks a ball, throws balls. Can turn pages in a book
Adults can support by: Providing vocabulary for a wide range of movements.Encourage independence and tasks that require tools.
Environment can support by: Providing a large range of play equipment and tools.
Health and self-care

Feeds self competently
Hold a cup with two hands
Needs to sleep for 10-13hours in a 24-hour period.
Develops increasing understanding of and control of the bowel and bladder.
Able to help and increasingly independently put on and take off simple clothing items such as hats, unzipped jackets.
Range 1: Makes needs known through crying and body movements. Expresses discomfort, hunger or thirst. First teeth usually appear. Opens mouth for spoon.
Adults Stroke their cheeks or pat their backs, reminding them that you are there and they are safe. Find out sleeping patterns from parents. Look after baby teeth as soon as they begin to appear.
Environment: Allow babies to sleep when they need. Make nappy changing and dressing area pleasent.
Range 2: Children- self-soothes, express feeling and communicates through gestures. grasps finger foods.
Adults: find out from parents how their baby communicates needs.
