The Causes of the Famine
Population Increase
Between mid 1700s to mid 1800s
1841 - population of 8.2 million (need for food)
Dependence on Farming
Most of the population lived in rural areas
Little industries = reliance on farming
Made no money and paid their rent using the crops they grew
Subdivision of Farms
Result - farms becoming smaller and less productive with each generation.
Penal Laws - Ireland had to
subdivide
their farmland between their sons.
Arrival of the Blight
Rotted potatoes and made them inedible
Ireland's main food source was wiped out.

Over-reliance on Potato
Grown in large quantities and stored for the rest of the year
Grew well in Irish climate
Monoculture: growing one crop only
