Based on the excerpts and research we have done on different aspects of Mussolini's reign as a fascist dictator in Italy we decided that he indeed established a totalitarian regime in Italy. As provided below he was able to instill total obedience into his people with the help of his secret police (OVRA) and the establishment of youth clubs/organizations that were to instill obedience and fascist ideologies into young children. For example in a primary school textbook from Source F, it states "The eyes of the Duce are on every one of you. A child who, even while not refusing to obey, asks ‘Why?’ is like a bayonet made of milk. You must obey because you must. What is the duty of a child? Obedience! The second? Obedience! The third? Obedience!". He prohibited establishing labor unions so no worker would revolt against his regime. He censored books on Jewish culture, freemasons, communist, and socialist ideologies, and soldiers' letters home. His financial institute bought out all the banks and businesses in Italy to control them as 3/4 of the economy was owned by Mussolini and his regime. In source C it states, "The Fascist government abolished in Italy every safeguard of the individual and every liberty. No free man can live in Italy, and an immoral law prevents Italians from going to a foreign country in pain of punishment. Italy is a prison where life has become intolerable. Everything is artificial - artificial finance - artificial exchange - artificial public economy - artificial order - artificial calm. Without a free parliament, a free press, a free opinion, and a true democracy, there will never be peace". This source shows the total control Mussolini and his regime had on the people of Italy stripping all their individual rights and liberty.
