Connotation
Wake as in 'a watch held over the body of a dead person' has a clearly negative connotation since it is closely associated with death and mourning.
Wake as in 'to rouse from or as if from sleep' has a close association with a disturbance. Usually, when someone wakes another they must disturb their rest.
Woke

adj. aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues(especially issues of racial and social justice)
adj. politically liberal or progressive(as in matters of racial and social justice) especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme
Connotation
The term 'woke' originated in the 1940s as it was used to describe those who were aware of the social injustices in America, particularly those of race. This use of the word had a positive connotation implying someone was socially and racially just.
Nowadays, woke is used in the same way but it in a more expansive sense being applied to many social movements. However, it has also gained a negative connotation as it is often used to describe liberals in a sarcastic manner by conservatives.

Connotation
Awake has a generally positive connotation as it is associated with becoming aware and conscious to one's own situation.
The act of awakening can also be associated with a loss of innocence. Remaining unaware of the harsh world is viewed as something of value for many people which is why parents typical try to shield their children from the cruel world.
