Definition
Obsessions
Recurrent, unwanted and persistent thoughts, images or urges that cause marked distress.
Compulsion
Repetitive behaviours or mental acts that are often driven by rigid rules and performed in an attempt to reduce anxiety
Etiology
Environment
(social isolation, physical abuse, negative emotionality)

Treatments
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
: Short term treatment (12-20 weekly session)
First line treatment (mild to moderate OCD)
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
(fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram)
(29% - 44% reduction in symptom)
Diagnosis
Either obsessions or compulsion or both present on days for a period of 2 week.
Obsessions ( unwanted ideas, images or impulses that repeated;y enter a person's mind) and compulsions (repetitive stereotyped behaviours or mental acts driven by rules that must be applied riidly)
The symptom must be disabling. Even young children will have some insigth into the senselessness of thr thoughts and behaviours.

Do your daily activities take a long time to finish ? (eg, getting ready for school)
