Social Influence Evaluations, Explains cultural differences :check:

Explains cultural differences :check:
Studies show countries differ in degree of obedience to authority
- One study found only 16% Australian women went to 450V, however 85% Germans went to 450V in another study
Shows in some countries authority figures are more likely to be legitimised and entitled to obedience. This reflects different structures in society and how people are raised to perceive authority
Cannot explain (dis)obedience :red_cross:
Cannot explain disobedience in a hierarchy where authority is clear and accepted
- Includes the nurse study where most were disobedient despite working in a rigid hierarchal structure
- A significant minority in Milgram's study disobeyed despite recognising the Experimenter's authority
Suggests some people may be innately more or less obedient
Social Support
Real-world research support :check:
Evidence for positive effects of social support
- A psychologist evaluated programme to help pregnant teens resist pressure to smoke, social support provided by a 'buddy'
- By the end, teens with a 'buddy' were much less likely to smoke than those without
Shows social support can help young people to resist social influence
Research support for dissenting peers :check:
Evidence to support role of dissenting peers in resisting obedience
- Study where ppts were told to produce evidence to help an oil company run a smear campaign - higher levels or resistance than in Milgram
- Likely because ppts were in groups so they could discuss. 29/33 rebelled
Shows peer support can lead to disobedience by undermining legitimacy
Locus of Control
Research Support :check:
Research supports the link between LOC and resistance
- Milgram study replicated to measure whether ppts were internals or externals
- 37% internals did not continue to highest shock, only 23% externals didn't
Shows resistance may be partly related to LOC, increases validity
Contradictory research :red_cross:
There's evidence to challenge the link between LOC and resistance
- Psychologist analysed data from America LOC conducted over 40 years
- Data showed over time people became more resistance AND more external, while we'd expect people to become more internal
Suggests LOC is not a valid explanation of resistance
