Noris and Inklehart - human security thesis

Gill & Lundegaard (2004) found that countries with more welfare spending have less people identify with religion - more stabilisation we can anticipate there will be less religiosity
countries that are undergoing significant development e.g. Spain joined the EU in the last 20 years and their religiosity has declined by 17% , Chile and Brazil have seen huge economic booms due to the discovery of minerals and their religiosity has all decreased
technological worldview - Bruce : we're now thinking more technically and mechanically and basing answers more off of logic and fact - impirical answers e.g. plane crash and you think of engine fault rather than the will of a god
Davie 'believing without belonging' may not attend church but have a spiritual life at home although church attendance may go down this may not mean people dont have faith
Voas and Crockett dispute this saying that this communal participation IS a large part of religion and that not belonging is not believing
the idea that the world is becoming more secular is largely a western idea , much of the rest of the world is still highly religious
how we measure religiosity?
Belonging - claiming to belong to a religion/ affiliate
Behaving - what people do aka attendance
Believing - what people think, do people take on religious texts literally or are they now thinking things are less fundamental
