Standard of living (Page 126)
The Labour Front (DAF)
As in 1933, Hitler banned trade unions, many workers were worried so DAF was made
Positives
Gave minimum pay levels
Protected rights of workers in the workplace
Gave maximum length of working week
Negatives
Workers had lost their righjt to negotiate improvements in pay and conditions with their employers
DAF had the power to punish workers who disrupted productions
Maximum length of working week went up by six hours per week
Wanted to control both employees and employers
Volkswagen - the 'people's' car
Another division of the KdF
Hitler asked Ferdinand Porsche to design a car which four people could fit in and could travel 40 miles to the gallon, which the average German could afford.
Encouraged workers to give five amrks from their wage, which will contribute to a new Volkswagen
The money orignally set up factories to make the cars, but then dhanged for production of arements
No workers saw their money or the Volkswagen
Beauty of Labour (SdA)
It was normal for workers to do building and decorating themselves, though with no extra pay - those who didn't volunteer were threatened
Gave employers tax breaks to help with building and decorating cost
Campaigned to get employers better facilities for workers such as toilets and changing rooms
A division of the KdF
Overall Judgment
Others struggled more with the added taxes
Some peoples lives became better with the extra money and could afford more luxeries
Strength through Joy (KdF)
Provided leisure activities for workers such as sports events, film and foreign travels
Division of the DAF
Made the benefits of work more fun
By 1936, there were 35 million members of the KdF
Employment
As there were more people in work due to the increase of new jobs, more people were happy and satisfactory
However, some minorities found it incredibly difficult to find jobs.
Wages
These generally improved from 1933 to 1936 but better in 1936 to 1939
Certain jovs such as in the the arement inductry rose more than those in the Labour Service for example
Price of goods als increased during this time, so some people didn't feel the extra money
Higher earners, like skilled workers, could afford the extra cost of food and had monet left over which was used to boy more luxery goods - those who owned cars tripled in the 1930s because of this
Low warners, like unskilled workers, used their extra wages to cover the higher costs for essentials, such as food so they had no money for different things
Hours worked
Hours rose from 43 hours in 1933 to 49 hours in 1939
This meant even workers whose wages went up had to work longer to earn them
