Topic 8: Human Systems and Resource Use
Population Pyramid
The Human Development Index
is a statistical composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which is used to rank countries into four tiers of human development.
biocapacity:
the biological capacity of an area/region/country to generate the resources & absorb the wastes of a given population
ecological footprint:
the amount of land & water that is required to support a human population at a given standard of living – providing all the resources & assimilating all the waste
carrying capacity:
the maximum number of individuals of a species that the environment can sustainably support in a given area
Sustainable waste management
means reducing and avoiding the amount of single-use plastic products along with increasing the amount recycled at the same time
Key Definitions :
1.
Crude birth rate
indicates the number of live births occurring during the year, per 1,000 population estimated at midyear.
2.
The Total Fertility Rate
of a population is the average number of children that are born to a woman over her lifetime
3.
Doubling Time
: The number of years required for a specified population to double in size at the current rate of population growth
4.
Rate of Natural Increase
the birth rate minus the death rate of a particular population, over a particular time period
Natural Increase Rate
NIR = (CBR – CDR)/10
Natural capital
is the set of renewable and non-renewable natural resources of an ecosystem. These biological systems provide us with goods such as water, wood, construction materials, energy, medicines, and genetic resources.
Crude Birth Rate
number of births/total population × 1000
Carbon footprint: a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community.
