Defense Mechanisms
Defenses are largely unconscious, thoughts, feelings, and behaviours shield us from unpleasant emotions, can be pathological or adaptive, categorized into primitive, neurotic and mature defenses
Splitting
Immature defense, often seen in cluster B persoanlity disorders, vieweing others as either 'all good' or 'all bad' idealized or devalued without middle ground
Reaction formation
Converting unwanted thoguhts, feelings, or impulses into their exact opposites
Sublimation
Transforming an unacceptable feeling or harmful impulse into something helpful and socially acceptable
