Criticisms
David Hume
Analogy of watch:
- not obvious
- no case for world being like a human-designed machine, similarities not obvious
- Could just compare world to anything
- Purpose and Order isn't as obvious in the world as a watch
Order in world doesn't mean there was a design idea:
- if we see order doesn't mean we lead to conclusion of a God
- no reason to assume mind of God could produce universe out of nowhere as we know intelligent thought doesn't bring about material things into existence
Don't know if this world is well-ordered:
- no other world to compare ours to
- Maybe there are worlds much more orderly than ours- make us see there is little order in this world
- we only see one universe, so can't make the same reasoning such as if we see smoke their must be a fire as we have only seen one example which is our world
Order:
- if we have order then this is only necessary for world's existence
- if everything chaotic then world would cease to exist- any world would look designed but this could be by chance
Even if world designed, doesn't mean God did it:
- Have to show order couldn't come about by anything other than God
- Hume wrote before Darwin's theory of evolution but this supports what he was saying here
No reason for creator to be God of Christianity:
- nature of God not supported by teleological arguments
- we have no reason to assume that even if God made the world, that God is still around- might have made world and left
