Cultural appropriation in media. - Coggle Diagram

- - - - This is usually what people think about when they hear cultural appropriation. The definition seems clear cut at face value, but can get muddy when we get more into the logistics. How are we meant to share culture if we can’t ‘take’ from it.

        Cultural offence is a better and more clear term. It highlights the harm part of cultural appropriation that many people seem to miss

        Cultural appropriation has led people to believe that culture can’t be interacted with at all due to the fear of offending others. People tend to think that beliefs are so important to some cultures that it must not be interacted with by anyone outside of that culture.

        It’s believed that participating in any culture outside of yours in any way is harmful and is disrespectful. It seems as if the culture is now inauthentic and has been taken over, hence the appropriation part of cultural appropriation.
- - - - Spirituality has become a hot topic online, especially on TikTok. Things like white sage have become a product that everyone wants. This ignores the people who’s culture relies on this. Indigenous people have used white sage in the spiritual practices for hundred of years. White sage being turned into a trend makes it less avalible to the people that need it, Indigenous people.
