World Sim
Goals
real-world skills
a better understanding of how the world works
authentic collaboration
outside of friend group
problem solving
thinking on your feet
how government systems funciton
why do wars happen?
negotiation
allies
common enemies
resources
who is in charge of what decisions
Objective: for students to gain a real world understanding of how global trade systems work
understand differences in how countries govern
FUN!
Setup
put them in real world simulations that happened so that they can understand how decisions are made, the ripple effect impact of a single decision, and how everyday civilian life is affected by these types of choices
Day-by-Day
Tuesday (morning)
Tuesday (afternoon)
Friday
Focus on your own country
Assigning roles
understanding current situation/getting to know unique moving pieces
time to research their country
Intro project
determine final goal for your country
Examples of roles: military general, tech industry, ambassadors, left-leaning civilians, etc.
grouped together via personality quiz
working across grade levels
mix up friend groups
some sense of familiarity and belonging
encourages wildly different approaches
simulates speaking across cultures (during negotiation)
ideally, forge new friendships
international relations (scaffolded by predetermined choices)
groups are countries
randomly assigned? coaches get to pick?
students will...
have the chance to move between rooms and talk to other countries in an official capacity (negotiations/deals)
each be playing a role within their own country
coaches will...
"issues" [think of better word] are unique to each country and reflect their real-world counterparts
student roles are dependent upon how the country works in the real world
example: China
poor air quality
overpopulation
not enough food
personality quiz we make
based on interests
each person should be able to do whatever they want
greed is the cause of everything bad
I got to look out for me and mine (protective vibe)
anti-war; violence is never justified
we need to keep order and prevent chaos
it's important to always stand up against what's wrong, even if it costs you
life is for the living--I'm here to have a good time
I want to know EVERYTHING (learning vibe)
always looking for people who might need my help
I can't take care of other people unless I take care of myself first
money over everything
each country gets to determine their own final goal (looping back to the personality quiz -- different groups of people have different goals in an interaction)
at the end, announce some sort of prize/award for the country/countries that achieved their goal?
would add competitive element
To Do
determine countries
determine "assignments"
how are we going to keep the momentum going? (avoid students just sitting around)
make personality quiz :)
come up with issues for each country
come up with roles for each country

two planned upsets: natural disaster (based on country) and pandemic
all other events (disasters) are based on interplay of actions taken by student groups
for example: if a country decides to attack you, that's something that you have to immediately address

civilian viewpoints on government, what goods they trade, where they outsource business, healthcare system, employment rates, educational systems, etc.
government system, economy
the point of this is to teach kids in a real world simulation how the relationships between countries are created, maintained, or destroyed
world dominance, peaceful cohabitation between all nations, increasing own GDP, etc.
taken before spring break
critical friends
what if one of the roles was researching
what do we do about kids who don't take the quiz?
