MLD/Remains

reaction to death

similarities

D feels justified in his actions

shown by immortalisation of event in the painting, which he is proud of

GT feels guilty and that his action was unjustified

he cannot escape the memory of the event

"his blood shadow stays on the street, and out on patrol / i walk right over it week after week."

"thats my last duchess painted on the wall,/ looking as if she were alive."

"probably armed, possibly not"

self-conciousness, uncertainty

"i gave commands then all smiles stopped"

no remorse, taking complete responsibility

catalogues the duchess various actions which led to him making the decision

"a heart - how shall i say?- too soon made glad,/too easily impressed"

"she liked whate'er/ she looked on and her looks went everywhere"

  • she enjoyed riding her horse
  • a man brought her cherries as a gift of appreciation

" she thanked men, - good!"

"as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old-name with anybodys gift"

therefore, acting as a judge in her case “choose never to stoop”, showing his implicit assurance in the narrative of unfaithfulness that he constructs around the Duchess.

unashamed assumption of responsibility indicates the unchecked power he holds

the duchess does not have a name, only referred to as her husbands property

this is similar to the soldiers in remains who are only ever mentioned as "someone else" suggests that these soldiers are as disposable as the looter they have killed. The lack of names makes them anonymous and perhaps suggests that this is the way they are regarded by others
