Opposition from the young (Page 102)
The Edelweiss Pirates
Emerged in the late 1930s in w.c districts in big German cities
Members used the symbol of the white edelweiss flower to show their allegiance
Were called the 'Travelling Dudes' in Eseen and 'Navajos' in Cologne
Consisted of teenagers, mostly boys as well as girls
Resented the military discipline of the Nazi youth groups and the general lack of freedom in Nazi Germany
Boys grew out their hair long and copied the clothing in America, white or checkered shirts and white socks
Hung out at street corners so the Gestapo wouldn't get them
Would taunt and even attack the Hitler Youth if they came across them
Went on long hikes in the countryside to break away from adults and Nazi restrictions
Pitched tents, sang parodies of the Hitler Youth songs and told jokes, mostly mocking the Nazis
The Swing Youth
Mainly teenagers from wealth m.c in big towns such as Hamburg and Berlin
Amried American culture such as the clothing, music and films
As they were wealthy, they played illegal imported records on their record player
Liked to gather, drink alcohol, smoke and listen.dance in groups
They had illegal organised dances which up yo 6,000 young people attended
Liked jazz music, but Heinrich Himmler (leader of the SS) said any young person found listening to jazz music would be 'beaten, given the severest exercise and then put to hard labour'
Opposition or Resistance?
They weren't a political opposition, they just wanted freedom from Nazi control, and the opposition was mainly cultural with clothing, music and behaviour.
Numbers were limited; by 1939, there were 2,000 members of the Edelweiss Pirates, but the Hitler Youth had eight million.
Were very small and didn't pose a large risk to the Nazis
Actions were limted and didn't do much to oppose the Nazis, only daubing anti-Nazi graffiti, telling anti-Nazi jokes and attacked members of the Hitler Youth
Ater 1939 in WW2, the Edelweiss Pirates started to physically attack the government
