Concept Map of Scientific Review Article - Marine Invertebrates: Communities at Risk
Cnidarian Coral Animals
Rich and diverse phylum at risk because of humans.
Local Impacts:
2.) Physical damage on reefs. Ex. anchors
3.) Overfishing
1.) Toxic runoff from the land harms reefs by creating poor water quality.
4.) Introducing invasive species
Global Impacts:
Release of excess CO2 in the atmosphere. (Creates ocean acidification).
1.) Roughly half of CO2 released is absorbed by the oceans.
2.) Corals absorb calcium to build their skeletons. This one of the reasons that a third of corals are at risk of extinction.
Shelled Pteropod Molluscs
Organisms that have a light shell made of aragonite or calcium carbonate that's soluble in water.
Impacts:
2.) Global warming effects on pteropods may change at different times of their life cycle and they may adapt to changes.
1.) CO2 is mostly absorbed by cold polar water (the same water the pteropods inhabit).
Ocean acidification would make the waters have a decrease in aragonite. This restricts the pteropods to deeper waters or the corrosive water could dissolve their skeleton.
Copepod Crustaceans
Important herbivores in the ocean.
Impacts:
1.) More warm-water copepods and fewer cold-water ones.
