Free, damped and forced oscillations
Natural frequency
When a body capable of oscillation is displaed from its equilibrium position and left free, it begins to oscillate with a definite frequency due to restoring force. This frequency depends on the intrinsic properties of the body such as size, shape, elasticity etc and is called the natural frequency ofthe body.
Damped oscillations
The oscillation of a body with decreasing amplitude due to energy dissipation or by a damping force is called damped oscillations of the body.
Free oscillations
In the abscence of a damping force, the body would oscillate infinitely with a constant amplitude. These are called free vibrations.
Forced oscillations
When a body acted by an external periodic force, oscillatis with the frequency of the force, then the oscillation of the body are called forced oscillations
Resonance
In forced vibration, if the frequincy of the external force is wqual to the natural frequency of the body, then the amplitude of the forced vibrations becomes quite large
