Chapter 5: Basic Six Sigma Concepts
Standard Deviation
measures distance between data points and means of all data. Large SD means widespread of points
gives you idea of how much variation exists in a process
Sample data:
Pareto Principle
aka 80/20 rule, 20% of causes lead to 80% of effects
Law of vital few: vital few inputs drive majority of outputs
Created by Joseph Duran named for Vilfredo Pareto, italian economist
Pareto Chart:
used for analyzing frequencies or causes of problems, also narrow approach that is too broad to address
Voice of Customer
foundational concept in quality programs which make better, consistent product
Based on customer feedback
VOC campaigns include general feedback & specific feed back
VOC tools: feedback form, phone surveys, mail surveys, social media, in person focus groups, online focus groups, user or beta testing
Likert Scale
5-point ranking scale
Basic Metric
Defects per million opportunities:
number of defects in a sample/ opportunities for a defect in the sample x 1,000,000
Defects per unit
: number of defects found / number of units in a sample
First Time Yield:
number of goods unit produced / number of units entering process
Rolled Througput Yield
: probability that unit will be generated by process without defects
(number of units entering-(scrap + rework))/ number of units entering process
