Lack of staffing
Anesthesia
As of 2018, 39% of all anesthesiologists in Canada are 55 or older, reaching the retirement potential, and leaving the workforce (Weeks, 2023)
Canada has fewer anesthesiologists per capita than other countries: 11 anesthesiologists per 100,000 people compared to 23 in Australia, 21 in US and 18 in UK (Weeks, 2023)
:silhouette: Personally, with conversations I have engaged in with anesthesiologists at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, I have seen many depart Alberta and leave for BC. Reasons include: political views, preferable lifestyle and overall better job opportunities in other provinces, I have also heard that anesthesiologists find working at CSFs 'easier' and more predictable hours
Nursing
