Child Language acquisition
skinner
Skinner's child development theory is based on the idea that all learning is the result of conditioning processes. Skinner's theory suggests that children learn as a result of the consequences of their behavior. If children experience a positive consequence after a bad behavior, they are more likely to repeat that behavior again in the future.
Bruner
LASS- lanaguge aqusition support system- the different things that surround a child that alow them to develop lanaguge
Nurture theorist
Discovery learning- Children learn best bu discovering things by themselves rather than simply being told things
Scaffolding- Adults providing supports to children to support their language learning
Piaget
Child tends to satisfy when talking.
When a child is being egocentric - he is not interested in knowing to who he is speaking to or whether he is being listened to. A child will talk to themselves or associating with anyone who happens to be involved with the moment.
Begins with the functions of language, dividing them into two large groups, "egocentric" and "socialised"
Three Categories of Egocentric Speech
Repetition - Child repeates words or sounds for the pleasure of talking - when a child repeats words or sounds - not aware thet they are talking or wether they are making sense.
Monologue - Child talks to themselves as if they were thinking outload.
Dual/Collective monologue - Between or among children, the other person is never taken into account - but serves as a stimulus
Socialised speech falls into four categories.
Criticism - children use language to make remarks about the work or behaviour of others
Commands, requests, threats and questions all of these interactions between one child and another.
Adapted information - Child starts to talk with another child or adult in order to influnce the childs actions.
Answers - real questions and to commands.
Vygotsky
ZPD- The place where a child best learns language. If it is too easy they will become bored byt if it is too hard they will become frustrated
social interaction encourages children to learn
Scaffolding from adults
Chomsky
Chomsky's theory is based around the Language Acquisition Device (LAD). It is a hypothetical part of the brain which Chomsky believed children were born with. It gave them the innate ability to acquire language.
Chomsky said that grammar is too hard for children to learn, but yet they are able to use and understand it with ease
because the LAD means we are able to organise language, and that we are hard wired to learn language
He also talks about virtuous errors which children make. These are grammatical and semantic errors that children make which are understandable and logical because children make an assumption about language rules that they know.
