USA Stopped lending money to europe and asked for the money back

They had their own problems, they couldn't sort out Europe's as well
People Turned to political extremists
Millions lost faith in their governments, Hitler was elected in Germany in 1933 promising to break the Treaty of Versailles
This made the work of the League harder
Huge unemployment in many countries
Germany especially badly hit with 6 million unemployed by 1932
Awful living conditions
Banks worldwide collapsed
Businesses collapsed
People Lost money and savings
In the 1920's USA was the most prosperous country in the world
USA Lent billions to help Europe recover from WW1
People borrowed money to buy shares in American companies
BUT, there was overproduction of goods and not enough demand which caused prices to fall
This caused a fall in share prices and stock market collapse
Businesses and Banks collapsed, and people lost savings
Manchuria Crisis 1931
Japan invaded part of China: Used incident over railway in Manchuria as the excuse to invade
League Became Involved: Lytton report said Japan to blame
League did not do anything else: Japan refused to accept Lytton report even though it was a permanent member of the League
Japan left the League: Japan invaded more of China and the League did nothing
Britain and France: They were occupied with the Great Depression and did not want to lose trade with Japan
Longer Term Consequences: Failure of the League to act showed dictators like Hitler the obvious weakness of the League
Abyssinia Crisis 1935
Italy Invades: Mussolini dreamed of making Italy a great empire again and invaded Abysssinia
League became involved: Abyssinia asked the League to help
Leaguels actions: Imposed economic sanctions on Italy but nto straight away
Britain and France: Did not close the Suez Canal to Italian ships, so supplies go though to Italy despite sanctions
Hoare-Laval pact: Britain and France made a secret agreement to give Abyssinia to Italy. When news leaked public were outraged
Long Term Consequences: League's reputation was ruined, Italy made pact with Hitler and left the league in 1936. Small countries saw the League would not protect them from invasion. Hitler and Mussolini saw how powerless the League was to stop them from starting a war
