Electricity
Materials can become electrically charged
Electric charge is a property of matter
Electric charge- property that allows an object to exert an electric force on another object without touching it
electric field- space around a particle through which an electric change can exert this force
Static charged are caused by the movement of electrons
Charging by Contact- When two uncharged objects made of certain materials touch eachother and electrons move from one material to the other
How materials affect static charging
Charging by Induction
Induction- the buildup of a charge without direct contact
Charge Polarization- you can build a charge without changing position of electrons, by Induction and the different charges.
Technology uses static electricity
Charges can move from one place to another
Static charges have potential energy
Electric Potential Energy- energy a charged particle has due to its position in an electric field
Electric Potential
Electric Potential- amount of electric potential energy per unit charge at a certain position in a electric field
Volt- a unit for electric potential, equal to one joule of energy per coulomb of charge
Charge Movement- when a charge moves, some of its electric potential energy is used in moving the charge
Lightning- high energy static Discharge caused by storm clouds
Charge Seperation
Charge Buildup
Static Discharge
Materials affect charge movement
Conductors and Insulators
conductor- material that allows an electric charge to pass through it easily
insulator- material that does not easily allow a charge to pass through it
Resistance
resistance- property of a material that determines how easily a charge can move through it
ohms- electric resistance is measured in ohms
Superconductors- they conduct better than good conductors
Grounding
Grounding- providing a harmless, low-resistance path, for electricity to follow
Electric current is a flow of charge.
Electric charge can flow continuously
eletric current- flow of charge
Current, voltage, and Resistance
ampere- standard unit of measure for current is ampere
Primary cells
storage cells
measuring electricity
Ohm's Law- relationship between volts, ohms, and amps
Electric cells supply electric current
Electrochemical cells
electric cell- produces electric current using chemical/physical properties of different materials
Solar cells
