when we suck on a straw, air is removed from it and the air pressure inside the straw decreases. The higher the atmostphic pressure surrounding the straw will push the liquid into the straw and into the mouth.
The base of a dam has a thicker its top as water pressure is higher at the base of the dam. Thicker dam is able to withstand higher pressure
