A group, no more than 200 of those camping on Desolation Hill, attempted to break down the perimeter wall the day before the festival began.
The very first festival was held at Ford Farm on the 31st August and the 1st September 1968. With around 10,000 attendees, it was very small in size when compared to how many people attended the Isle of Wight festival these days

The 1970 event was by far the largest of these early festivals; indeed it was said at the time to be one of the largest human gatherings in the world, with estimates of over 600,000, surpassing the attendance at Woodstock.
