Explain the strategies used to reduce traffic management issues in Edinburgh and evaluate their effectiveness.
Edinburgh has a sophisticated camera-based traffic monitoring system that enables traffic light sequences to be altered or extended if congestion occurs.
This is ineffective because... the traffic camera based monitoring system is of little use if there is heavy traffic in all directions.
Edinburgh has designated bus lanes called greenways on arterial routes (e.g. Lothian road and the A71)
this makes public transport more efficient in hope that more people leave their cars at home.
This was ineffective because...
Greenways make the remining lanes more congested.
in 2015 the regulations have been relaxed allowing cars to use bus lanes out with rush-hour which slows down the mode of public transportation.
Construction of a new tram system began in 2008 and then the scaled down network finally reopened in 2014 caring passengers rom Edinburgh airport to York place, beyond St Andrews square.
This is effective because... the tram systems transport around 5 million passengers per year.
This was ineffective because... the tram system costed a staggering £776 million and their was a huge amount of disruption during its construction.
Edinburgh has an extensive network of cycle paths and cycle lanes to encourage people to cycle as a car alternative.
This is effective because... several cycle paths lead to the city centre which aids commuting while keeping cyclists away from cars which improves safety.
This is not effective because... designated cycle paths run parallel to tram tracks, with cyclists falling off their bikes due to the tracks leading to a range of injury's such as fractures, desolations and several deaths.
park and ride facilities allows people to drive to the edge of the city and park their car for free e.g. Striation or Hermiston gate, and then travel the rest of the way into the city using the high frequency bus service.
This is effective because... it has become increasingly popular for commuters as they are able to travel into the city quickly by buss along the greenway.
Edinburgh has invested over £100 million in its buses to make them a more attractive mode of transport.
This is effective because... there were 118 million bus journeys in Edinburgh in effect which considerably reduced the number of cars on the roads.
Edinburgh has started to introduce hybrid busses that can partly run of electricity order to reduce carbon emissions.
This is effective because... Hybrid busses have been able o switch to using electricity on the most polluted sections of its route, thus improving the air quality.
there are traffic restrictions that have been put in place on princess street and closures on the high street during festival season.
This is been effective because... traffic restrictions in the CBD help to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians.
This is ineffective because...inevitably traffic is diverted onto neighboring streets, e.g. Queen, Street making them more conjected.
new roads have been built around the edge of the city e.g. the Edinburgh city bypass that aims to reduce congestion within the city centre.
This is ineffective because... the Edinburgh city bypass becomes badly conjected during rush hour however there would be an unthinkable amount of congestions in central Edinburgh if the bypass didn't exist!
There has been improved rail services such as the borders railways linking Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Scottish boarders opened in 2015.
this is effective because... the boarders railway is likely to stimulate economic development and population growth in Midlothian and parts of the boarders.
