Factors about the driver
-
Distractions
Increased reaction time and thinking distance and can cause serious accidents. E.g. children, mobile phones
Factors about the car
Poorly maintained cars
If a car is poorly maintained, for example, brakes aren't fully maintained they will need longer to stop or if the tyres aren't fully maintained so they are less effective increasing braking distance.
Speed car travelling
The faster a vehicle is travelling the further it ravels before it stops. This is because both the thinking and braking distance increase with increased speed.
Factors about the road
Wet or icy roads
A wet or icy road is slippery and drivers stopping distances increase as they have to break with less force to avoid skidding. The stopping distance can be up to double on a wet road than a dry road. On an icy road, your stopping distance could be up to 10 times more than a dry road.
