WATER
ADVANTAGES
Improving physical performance - Not drinking water can make your physical performance worse. Drinking water is important especially during hot weather and intense exercises.
Improving health - Water can improve our health by raising our energy levels and can help prevent and treat headaches.
Enhancing brain functions - Studies have shown that even the smallest amount of dehydration such as 1-3% of weight loss, can affect brain malfunctions.
DISADVANTAGES
Harms the environment - Businesses use around 12% of the world’s water supply mostly because they don’t use water efficiently. This can cause harm to the water ecosystems and since we need to drink water too, it makes the problem worse.
Reduced access to clean water - Overuse of water can make finding clean water to drink harder for us humans.
Harms the heart - Although drinking water is a good thing, overhydration can cause heart failures especially in dialysis patients.
NUCLEAR POWER
ADVANTAGES
Low carbon emissions: Nuclear-powered plants can generate electricity without releasing carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases, which helps fight climate change.
High energy density: Nuclear fuel is a dependable and effective energy source because a small amount of it can produce enormous amounts of electricity.
Opportunities for employment: Nuclear power plants, particularly domestic ones, have the capacity to hire a large number of people at salaries significantly higher than those of other sources of generation.
DISADVANTAGES
Radioactive waste: Produced by nuclear power, radioactive waste must be stored for a long time and may be hazardous to human health and the environment.
High accident rate: Although nuclear accidents are extremely uncommon, they can have disastrous results when they do happen. The Fukushima and Chernobyl disasters are two examples.
Public opposition: Because of worries about safety and the long-term storage of radioactive waste, the public's perception of nuclear power can be rather unfavorable.
AIR
ADVANTAGES
Photosynthesis - Air contains carbon dioxide which helps plants to survive because plants use carbon dioxide to provide food for themselves.
Immune system support - The increase of the amount of fresh air we get, will also increase the amount of oxygen in our body. This can help the white blood cells function better by helping to fight bacterias and germs in our body.
Cleans the lungs - Breathing in fresh air can help clean up our lungs because oxygen actually dilates our lungs and when we exhale the air that comes out are the toxins from our body.
DISADVANTAGES
Air pollution - Air pollution happens from many sources like vehicles, factories, and much more. This is affecting the air that we breathe into our bodies, our lungs will be harmed by the air pollution throughout the world. We might also have trouble breathing and asthma.
Causing cancer - Inhaling polluted air can cause lung cancer and adding a cancer-causing gene in your lungs which gives your family members a chance of getting cancer as well.
SUNLIGHT
ADVANTAGES
Support bones - Sunlight helps to support our bones and make them healthier by the vitamin D that they have. Vitamin D helps to make our bones stronger and healthier, it also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and more.
Manage calcium levels - When our skin is exposed to the sun, it gives us vitamin D which helps with the absorption of calcium in our body. Without a sufficient amount of sunlight, our body may have a lack of calcium even if the diet includes the amounts of the mineral.
DISADVANTAGES
Skin damage and sunburn - Overexposure to the sun rays can lead to sunburn and skin damages which also increases the risk of getting skin cancer.
Global Warming - Increased temperatures in the world can lead to even more light exposures and affect the amount of vitamin D in our bodies and also increase risks of skin cancer. The sun rays are also affecting greenhouse gases which is also leading to global warming.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
ADVANTAGES
Low emissions: Geothermal power plants contribute more to a cleaner environment because they emit fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuel power plants.
Dependency on fossil fuels: Dependence on fossil fuels is lessened thanks to geothermal energy, which offers stability and independence.
Long lifespan: Power plants and heat pumps, which are part of the geothermal energy infrastructure, have a long lifespan and offer long-term energy solutions.
DISADVANTAGES
Geothermal heat pumps: Despite their great efficiency, geothermal heat pumps can be very expensive to install initially, especially if new ductwork is required.
Construction: Geothermal power plant construction can be very expensive, particularly in regions with difficult geology.
Non-condensable gases: During extraction and processing, geothermal steam may release gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere.
SOIL
ADVANTAGES
Provides home for organisms - It helps provide nutrients to living plants and animals. There are many living organisms to help decompose the soil and break down the waste left behind by the other organisms.
Water filtration - Soil also acts like a water filter for us and can make the water we drink cleaner and healthier for our bodies. Soil filters pollutants like heavy metal and pesticides. It can also capture and absorb nitrogen and phosphorus, these nutrients are found naturally in the environment but can be harmful if they enter water bodies.
Control temperature - Soil also plays a role in maintaining and regulating the temperature levels in our environment. The temperature close to the soil surface tends to be lower than the temperature above it. This happens because the soil helps to absorb and store solar radiations.
DISADVANTAGES
Slower growing cycle - Although using soil to grow plants is a great thing, providing the plants with nutrients, the growing cycle of the plants is slower and can take more time to grow.
Dries out quickly during the summer - This is only with certain types of soils like sandy soil. It dries up very quickly in the summer due to the hot weather.
PLANTS
ADVANTAGES
Reduce stress levels - Studies show that plants can help to reduce stress and make you feel calmer and more comfortable.
Get food sources - Plants provide us with a lot of healthy food sources to eat. For example, asparagus, autumn olives, blueberries and many other healthy foods.
DISADVANTAGES
Deforestation - Trees are being cut down a lot due to the amount of paper used by us humans and it’s causing deforestation.
Greenhouse gases - Some plants need greenhouse gases to grow and survive, so people put them in greenhouses but, this is causing the Earth’s temperature to rise higher.
IRON ORE
ADVANTAGES
A vital raw material: The main ingredient in steel production, which is crucial for manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, and a host of other applications, is iron ore.
Infrastructure development: Roads, ports, railroads, and other infrastructure are frequently developed as a result of mining operations. Communities nearby may benefit from this.
Recycling: A significant amount of steel and iron is recycled, which lowers the need for new mining and increases resource efficiency.
DISADVANTAGES
Deforestation: Deforestation, habitat destruction, and a significant loss of biodiversity are all consequences of mining operations.
Waste generation: The mining of iron ore produces a lot of waste, including tailings, which, if improperly managed, can pose health and environmental risks.
Air pollution: Both humans and animals may experience respiratory problems as a result of dust emissions from mining operations.
ROCKS
ADVANTAGES
Climate stability: The cycling of carbon dioxide between the land, oceans, and atmosphere is greatly aided by rocks, particularly those formed by volcanic activity. This contributes to a stable climate on Earth.
Soil health: By releasing nutrients and raising soil alkalinity, enhanced rock weathering—the breakdown of rocks—can improve soil health. This can lead to more efficient crop growth and increased food security.
Creation of habitat: Quarries, gravel pits, and other open mines can serve as habitats for protected or endangered species, giving plants and animals a crucial place to call home when they are being forced out of other areas by development, construction, etc.
DISADVANTAGES
Degradation of the land: Quarrying and mining can cause sinkholes, soil erosion, land subsidence, and other issues that make land unusable for farming.
Depletion of water: Mining activities have the potential to use a lot of water in the area, which could affect the amount of water available later on for other purposes.
Pollution: It may surprise you to learn that mining can generate hazardous waste that contaminates air and water, endangering both the environment and human health.
FOSSIL FUELS
ADVANTAGES
High Energy Density: Coal, oil, and natural gas are examples of fossil fuels that have a high energy density per unit of mass or volume, which makes them effective for powering industries, automobiles, and electricity production.
Global accessibility: Global accessibility and relative abundance have historically enabled fossil fuels to satisfy the energy needs of an expanding population.
Transportation Ease: Compared to some other energy sources, fossil fuels are comparatively easy to transport and store, which allows for their use in a variety of settings and applications.
DISADVANTAGES
Public Health Impacts: Research indicates that a considerable number of deaths globally are attributable to air pollution from fossil fuels, which is a major cause of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders.
Environmental Degradation: The use and extraction of fossil fuels can cause serious harm to the environment, such as soil erosion, water pollution, and habitat destruction.
Contamination of Land and Soil: The extraction and processing of fossil fuels may result in contamination of land and soil, which may have an effect on ecosystems and human health.
