What happened?
As Tiberius' one-year term as tribune was nearing its end, the Senate tried to delay the voting so Tiberius would be out of office before it could happen
So Tiberius tried to get elected as tribune again, but no one in history has ever held a magistracy for 2 consecutive years
-
What did the Senate do?
One senator and Tiberius' cousin, Scipio, was concerned about Tiberius claiming power

On the day of the voting, a fight broke out and Tiberius was killed
-
Context:
- Soldiers of the Roman army had to fund their own weapons, which was only possible if they owned lands to farm and make money
- When the soldiers left for their military campaigns, the families left behind would often struggle to supply for manual labour for crops
- Therefore these lands would end up being sold to wealthy nobles, and when the soldiers returned they would come back to no land or income to support their families
- They would be forced to move to Rome to find work, causing unemployment to rise and seeking for senators to create laws to help them
- But senators were unwilling because most of them were the same nobles who bought the lands
- Carthage fell at end of Punic War in 146 BC
- Rome now the most dominant power, possessing lands from Spain to Asia Minor
- Expansion in power = Leading citizens becoming wealthier
- Rich get richer, poor still struggling
