Matters: Atoms,Compounds and Elements
What are they?
Atom is the smallest unit of ordinary substances that constitute chemical elements; the atom is also the smallest particle in chemical changes and the smallest unit of the chemical properties of elements.
-
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.
-
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which is characteristic of a chemical element and determines its place in the periodic table.
What are they?
It is more than one hundred basic metallic and non-metallic pure substances, and it is also the basic unit of matter.
How are elements different from compounds?
Elements are pure substances which are composed of only one type of atom. Compound are substances which are formed by two or more different types of elements that are united chemically in fixed proportions.
How are elements arranged on the periodic table?
Elements are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number.
-
What are they?
A substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined.
-
How is a compound different from a mixture?
Compounds are substances which can be formed by chemically combining two or more elements. Mixtures are substances that are formed by physically mixing two or more substances.
What are the properties of a compound?
The two properties of compounds are physical and chemical characteristics.
