Role of the Father
Distinctive Role for Fathers: Karen Grossman (2002) caried out a longitudinal study and found that the quality of adolescent attachment to the father related to the fathers play with infants - suggests fathers have a different role in attachment which is more to do with play and stimulation and less to do with nurturing
Fathers as Primary Caregivers: when fathers do end up taking on the role of the main caregiver they adopt behaviours typical to mothers - Field (1978) filmed 4 month babies in face-to-face interactions with their fathers finding that when the father was the primary caregiver they spent more time smiling, imitating and holding the baby than when the father was the secondary caregiver - key to attachment is the level of responsiveness
AO3: Strength - fathers support the role of the mother - supportive fathers provide mothers with needed time away from childcare - helps reduce stress in the mother and improve the mothers relationship with the child
AO3: Weakness - children without fathers do not develop any differently to those who grow up with both a mother and a father - suggests fathers don't have a significant impact on a child's development
AO3: Weakness - females are biologically pre-disposed to be more nurturing - oestrogen leads to the caring behaviours seen more in women than men
