Lack of workers in Germany after WW2 so 'guest' worker brought in
They were treated poorly and lived in poor conditions
Immigration concerns led to hostility towards them
Never granted citizenship so couldn't vote
Tensions with German-Turkish population due to Islamic religion led to neo-Nazi attacks in the 1980s
1989 there was a bombing in Cologne of a Turkish neighbourhood
Attitude towards Jews
Basic Law regranted citizenship regardless of race, religion etc
Adenauer negotiated reparations with Israel
1972 Brandt visited the Warsaw Ghetto which involved his famous "Kniefall"
Still antisemitism present due to Nazi impact
1961 survey asked Germans if they personally felt guilty about the Holocaust and 88% said no
Denial and disassociation in the 1950s over the Holocaust
1960s there was a shift in attitude due to the 1961 Frankfurt Auschwitz trials
1970s memorial buildings were built and plaques in memory of the Jewish
In 1979 the US produced a series on the Holocaust with Meryl Streep and surveys showed that 86% of viewers discussed the Holocaust with friends or family after watching
Antisemitic attitude still persisted especially among left wing activist who were critical of the Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories following the Six Day War of 1967 (they bombed a Jewish community centre in West Berlin)
Black Germans
There was a lot of US troop in Germany after WW2 and thousands of them were black
German women had sexual relations with these black US soldiers which led to mixed race children "mischlingskinder"
Many of these mixed race children were put up for adoption
These mixed race children faced discrimination as they reminded their Germans of the WW2 defeat (similar to the children who were 'Rhineland Bastards' as a result of German women relationships with French soldiers)
