Morquio Syndrome - Coggle Diagram
Morquio Syndrome
Where Do the Effects of Morquio Syndrome Show in the Body?
JOINTS
hypermobile joints are a common feature of Morquio syndrome allowing your joints to bend in unusual positions
TEETH
Widley spaced out teeth results in Morquio syndrome
HEAD
The head can be noticably bigger.
SPINE
Abnormal spine development can result of this disease as well as severe scoliosis
TORSO
Morquio syndrome impacts the torso with it being significantly smaller than an average persons
Who Discovered Morquio Syndrome?
Dr. Morquio discovered the syndrome while working on a report which he called ‘familial skeletal dystrophy’ which affected four out of five of the children in the family
Morquio Syndrome was discovered by a pediatrician named Dr.Morquio in 1929
Dr. Morquio was born in 1867, and attended school at University of Montevideo from 1887 - 1890 graduating as a pediatrician. He later took further training in paediatrics in Paris working at clinics.
He Then Became Professor of the childrens clinic in Montevideo in 1900. Dr. Luis Morquio died in 1935
When Is The Life Expectancy Of Morquio Syndrome?
The life expectancy of Morquio Syndrome ranges differently depending on the level of severity that the person has
MILD CASES: People with milder cases live into their 50's and 60's and could possibly even live longer
SEVERE CASES: More severe cases of Morquio Syndrome with bigger skull and organ problems can lead to an early death in the 20's and even in teen years
How Is Morquio Syndrome Cared For?
There is no definite cure for Morquio syndrome although there are treatments that can extend life expectancy.
TYPE A: focuses more on Enzyme replacement and non surgical treatments
TYPE B: focuses on orthopedic treatments to help with bone deformation
NON-SURGICAL
-Enzyme replacement (only for type A )
-Physical Therapy to improve mobility
SURGICAL
Surgery to decompress bones and stabilize cervical vertebrae and the spinal cord.
-Surgery to remove tonsils and adenoids to open the airway.
Why Do Some People Get Morquio Syndrome And Not Others?
Morquio syndrome is caused by a recessive gene which both parents must carry
People without the syndrome don't have it because either both of their parents don't have the gene, only one of their parents have the gene, or both parents have the gene at it didn't get passed onto their child
The percent chance of someone getting the syndrome is 1 in 200,000
What Types of Morquio Syndrome Are There?
TYPE A:
This is where an enzyme called galactosamine-6-sulfatas is missing.
TYPE B:
Type B is considered more dangerous with a shorter life expectancy.
Type B: This type occurs when there isn't enough of an enzyme called beta-galactosidase
