Why do people get Morquio Syndrome?
The first reason this can happen is because your body doesn’t make enough enzymes which are needed to turn sugar chains into smaller molecules
The second reason this can happen is because your body produces enzymes that don’t work properly
This results in the sugar chains building up in cells, blood and conective tissue which causes harm to the body over time
Morquio syndrome occurs because sugar chains known as glycosaminoglycans, which help form bone, cartilage, ege corneas, skin and things like tendons and ligaments, cannot be broken down
What is Morquio Syndrome?
Symptoms include scoliosis, knock knees, larger facial features, tooth issues, etc.
Morquio Syndrome doesn’t affect intelligence
Morquio Syndrome is a genetic disease that causes irregular bone growth
There are 2 types:
Type A: happens when a certain type of enzyme isn’t there
Type B: there isn’t enough of a different type of enzyme
Who's most likely to get Morquio Syndrome?
When your parents pass down Morquio syndrome, they don’t experience the symptoms
Happens in about one in every 200,000 births, so it’s rare
It’s a genetic disease so anyone can get it
Where in the world is Morquio Syndrome common?
Northern Ireland with 1 per 76, 000 births
1.10 per 100, 000 births in Mexico
UAE with 1 in every 71,000 births
How is Morquio Syndrome treatment
For type A, there is an enzyme renewal therapy. This will help break down sugar molecules that build up and will make symptoms less severe. This is not available for type B.
Spinal fusion surgery is possible for people with both types. Spinal fusion surgery is a surgery that joins two or more bones in the spine together which ensures stability an relieves pain in the spine.
There is no actual cure for Morquio Syndrome
When during your life do symptoms of Morquio Syndrome show?
Signs of Morquio Syndrome usually show between the ages 1 and 3
Sympotoms will get worse over time because this is a progressive disease
Symptoms may not show at birth
