Body Language & Facial Expressions
Gestures: Movements of hands, arms, and body that convey messages (e.g., waving, pointing).
Posture: How a person’s body is positioned can communicate openness, defensiveness, or relaxation.
Facial Expressions: Express emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, etc.
Eye Contact: Indicates attention, affection, hostility, or interest.
Paralanguage
Tone of Voice: The emotional quality of voice (e.g., warm, cold, angry).
Pitch: High or low tones convey different meanings (e.g., a higher pitch can imply excitement).
Volume: Loud or soft speech
Speech Rate: Fast speech can indicate excitement or nervousness, slow speech can show calmness or deliberation.
Haptics (Touch)
Types of Touch: Functional, social, or intimate touch.
Cultural Differences: Different cultures have varying norms for appropriate touch.
Contextual Significance: The meaning of touch can vary depending on the relationship and situation.
Chronemics (Time)
Monochronic Time: A focus on punctuality, schedules, and doing one task at a time
Polychronic Time: More flexible, multitasking, and less emphasis on strict schedules (e.g., Latin American or Middle Eastern cultures).
Waiting Time: How long someone is willing to wait can convey interest, power, or disinterest.
(Space)
ersonal Space: The physical distance maintained during interactions, varies by culture (proxemics).
Territorial Markers: Items or behaviors that signal ownership of a space (e.g., setting up a desk, closing a door).
Spatial Behavior: How people arrange themselves in public vs. private spaces, indicating social status or intimacy.
Deception Cues
Microexpressions: Brief, involuntary facial expressions that reveal emotions.
Inconsistencies: Mismatch between verbal and non-verbal communication.
Body Language: Shifts in posture, eye contact, or nervous movements when someone is lying.
Paralanguage: Changes in pitch, rate, or tone when someone is deceptive.
