Strategies
Predictive skills
An effective lector predicts the context which surrounds the text. This process consist of seeing if the expectations created before coincide with the reality of the text.
The prediction can be the result of the expectations that they did watching the title, images, etc.
Scanning
The lector is involved in the use of reading techniques only for extracting very specific information in the text.
Some good strategies for doing a good scanning are
Knowing the specific information that we are looking for
Trying to anticipate how the answer will show
Using titles or any other element that will help us the content of the information that we search
Reading the different parts skipping what it´s irrelevant
Skimming
The lectors often have to get the general idea of a text
Some good strategies for doing skimming are
Reading the title
Reading the introduction or the first paragraph
Reading the first phrase of each paragraph
Reading titles and subtitles
Seeing any image, chart or graphic
Focusing on cursive letter or bold type
Reading the last paragraph
Extracting the information by the context
It is essential that the teacher teaches the students to get the meaning of a word, using the context which surrounds that word
Activities
Pre-reading activities
It helps the students to activate the knowledge, they have before reading the text.
This strategy makes the students focus on the key ideas of the text
The teacher can use this strategy to highlight how the text is organized, to teach new vocabulary or to give the student a reason to read the text

Doing skimming and scanning

It helps the student to develop different strategies of reading, improving their knowledge of the foreign language
There are different ways to approach a text
The teacher reading it loud
The students read the text quietly

There are some activities to do while reading
Guess the meaning of the unknown words by it´s meaning
Predict the content of the text
Read specific fragments of the text
Answering comprehensive questions while reading the text
Post-reading activities
Students need to think about the text once they read it to understand it
On the one hand, when we make students talk and write after reading, we have them improving their oral and written expression. On the other hand, this type of activities allow us to check if the students understood the text.
